We know it's early to mention the C word but now is a great time to plan your Christmas trip to Liège. If you are looking for a quiet, uneventful break, Liège is not for you! The entire town will be gripped with Christmas fever especially with the "Liège, Christmas City" concept taking over. Here are some great reasons to spend the silly season with us:

Christmas Market

One of the biggest celebrations of the year, and one which has taken place in Liège for many years, Liège Christmas Market is one of the oldest and largest markets in Belgium. Think of it as a village, with 4 iconic houses: the Chalet de la Gruyère, La Maison ardennaise, La Maison du Pèket and the Chalet "Au pied des pistes". Imagine walking under thousands of sparkling fairy lights, wrapped up tightly and browsing the stalls for trinkets to take home as Christmas gifts for your loved ones. The market opens on November 30th and closes on New Year’s Eve so you have plenty of time to take it all in.

Traditional food

Seasonal and traditional food is what makes a Christmas in Liege so extra-special. There are many food offerings from sweet to savoury and local to international so there is something to suit every palate. As soon as you smell the delicious sugary waffles you won’t be able to resist. Ask for a Liege waffle which is uneven in shape, dense and chewy. It would be a shame to visit Belgium without a cone of our world famous Frites with a dollop of mayo or warm yourself up with a Baileys Hot Chocolate or a mulled wine to stay in the festive mood.

Ice Rink

Since 1999, every year the Place de la Cathédrale becomes a winter wonderland with couples holding hands and children having fun skating around the festive ice-rink. The rink opens for five weeks and attracts upwards of 20,000 skaters every year. Visit with your family or a group of adventurous friends and spend a fun-filled afternoon racing, dancing and skating around this fabulous rink. They have great special offers for groups, families and early birds.

European Circus Festival

This one is a real spectacle! For the past 28 years, the European Circus Festival has been celebrating all things circus and this year to celebrate the 250 years of circus, they have a brand new show. Acts from all over the world and every walk of life come together to defy gravity, make us laugh and generally brighten up our days. The tickets are reasonably priced and the show lasts 2h15 so you can make a night of it after a trip to the markets.

Other events during the Christmas Season include:

  • A beautiful ice sculpture exhibition
  • A concert in the Cathedral
  • Sledge run
  • Christmas Shuttle

And a whole lot more…
